Nokia has withdrawn patent lawsuits against RIM after the BlackBerry manufacturer agreed to pay $65 million as part of a new licensing agreement

RIM will pay Nokia around $65 million (£40 million) to settle all existing patent litigation between the two companies.

Nokia filed actions against RIM in the US, UK and Canada in November last year after it won a tribunal against the Blackberry-maker regarding its WLAN-related patents, which provide short-range wireless high-speed data connections between mobile data devices.

The companies’ new patent licence agreement settles all existing patent litigation between them and Nokia has also withdrawn pending actions in the US, UK and Canada.

As well as the one-off payment, RIM will pay Nokia royalty payments on the sale of devices found to breach the old patent licence agreement.

Nokia’s chief intellectual property officer Paul Melin said: “We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM and reached this new agreement.”

He said it enables Nokia “to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”
